Beginners to Advanced. Jazz, Folk, Pop and Classical
Whether you're just starting out or want to upgrade your skills let me help you on your journey. I can teach you to read music (not as hard as you think). Sometimes reading music can feel like working on a candy wrapping assembly line! Notes are flying at you faster than you can figure out where they are on the guitar. Let me show you how to translate TAB to notation and vice versa and help unlock the mysteries of the guitar fingerboard. If you've been playing the same 4 or 5 chords for the last 4 or 5 years I can get you up to speed in no time. Here's a sample lesson that teaches three note triad forms in all 12 keys on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd strings and a sample lesson that teaches 7th chords (great for Jazz) on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th strings. Here's another sample lesson that teaches the Pentatonic Scale (great for improvising in all styles) in all 12 keys in 2nd position. One more sample lesson with scale forms for all 12 keys in 5th position.
I have been teaching stringed instruments since the 1970's. Using techniques learned from many years of private study I have developed custom teaching materials to foster a thorough understanding of the guitar fingerboard. Music theory as applied to the guitar is integrated into my teaching method. I take special pleasure in sharing my musical knowledge and helping aspiring musicians reach their musical goals. It has always been my aim to give personalized individual attention to every student. I strive to teach musical skills that will apply to all styles of music and that the student will be able to build upon throughout their musical travels.
I am currently on the music faculty at County College of Morris. I've served on the faculties of Rutgers University, Seton Hall University and Essex County College as well as teaching group guitar lessons in the South Orange/Maplewood school system and at Montclair Kimberly Academy and private lessons at various private schools. I hold a Masters degree from the Jazz Studies Masters program at Rutgers University.
